If you find yourself tossing and turning all night, it could be because your mattress is the problem. Choosing the wrong mattress can lead to back pain, chronic fatigue, and lack of concentration in the long run.
And when you finally do get around to buying a new mattress, you'll be faced with a multitude of different types. To help you navigate the mattress maze, we've compiled the most important considerations for finding the best mattress for you in this article.
Right from the start, it's worth clarifying what types of mattresses there are.

#1 (Cold) foam mattresses
There are three known types of cold foam mattresses:
- HR cold foam (HR is the abbreviation for High Resilience): this is what is called “real cold foam” also for a mattress
- HD cold foam (HD is the abbreviation for heavy duty): higher density and more durable mattresses
- and traditional cold foam.
In the case of cold foam mattresses, it is important that the mattress is not too hard, as this can cause muscles to tighten. (The typical “I woke up feeling like I was beaten to death” feeling may be familiar to many in the morning.)
However, cold foam mattresses have many advantages.
Advantages of cold foam mattresses
Cold foam is well ventilated, so it can be ideal for those who sweat a lot at night. It can also be a good choice if you toss and turn a lot at night (especially if you often argue with your partner because they move with you).
The cold foam mattress has perfect point elasticity, which means that even if you move, your partner will not feel any of it. This means that it also provides better support and follows the curve of the spine better than a bonell spring mattress.
So a cold foam mattress is a great alternative even if you have joint pain or everything hurts in the morning.
Disadvantages
The biggest disadvantage of cold foam mattresses is when you choose the wrong one for your needs. By the way, cold foam is probably one of the most widely used mattress types, a real Jolly Joker.

#2 Memory foam mattresses
Memory foam mattresses are the most popular and well-known type of mattress. However, if we had to single out who they are best for, we would have to say that they are the best choice for seniors.
At this age, it's not good if the mattress is too hard: it puts pressure on the joints, bones, and muscles.
Benefits of memory foam mattresses
A memory foam mattress works by softening under the influence of your body heat and weight, then taking on the shape of your body. Lying on a memory foam mattress makes you feel like you're on a fluffy cloud. This relieves the pressure on your vertebrae and bones, and is also extremely gentle on your joints.
Disadvantages of memory foam mattresses
However, there are also clear disadvantages, namely ventilation. So, if you tend to sweat more, especially at night, it is definitely worth avoiding memory foam mattresses.
In short, if you are looking for a truly "sinking" mattress that completely contours to your body, then a memory foam mattress is the way to go.
The density of the material
Before we get to spring mattresses, let's take a small detour, as there is an important metric for foam mattresses, namely material density.
The general view is that the higher the density of a mattress, the more it can withstand wrinkling and the slower it wears out. The most common density mattresses in Hungary are those with a density of 2-32 kg/m3, but mattresses with a density of 40-50 kg/m3 are also not uncommon.
#3 Spring mattresses
The classic bonell spring mattress consists of several smaller spiral springs attached to each other.
This also leads to one of its biggest disadvantages, so unlike the previous ones, we will now explain this point first.
Disadvantages of bonell spring mattresses
The disadvantage comes from the interconnected springs: they are so tightly connected that they transmit movement. (So if you move in bed at night or in a sofa bed , then your partner's space will really wave.)
Moreover, springs do not really take the shape of the human body or spine, and can be much harder than, for example, a cold foam mattress. Another major disadvantage is that each spring can exert hard pressure points on the hips or other parts of the body.
Moreover, springs can wear out quickly, especially if they are not used for their intended purpose (for example, children jump on them every day).
Advantages
The biggest advantage of a bonell spring mattress is that it is cheap and well ventilated. In the past, perhaps until the 2000s, this was the most common mattress type, but since then the technology has changed and refined a lot; and there are much more comfortable and better alternatives to bonell spring mattresses.

The main considerations when choosing a mattress
Now let's look at who should buy what type of mattress.
If you toss and turn a lot at night...
If you toss and turn a lot at night, a cold memory foam mattress might be a good choice. Definitely not the spring or bonell spring version, as these tend to wave.
If you have joint and back pain…
Then a memory foam mattress may be the best choice.
If you sweat a lot at night...
In that case, you should avoid a memory foam mattress: a semi-hard, cold foam mattress is a much better choice.
It is very important to choose a mattress that suits your sleeping position. A firm to medium-firm mattress is a good choice for back sleepers, and a medium-firm mattress is a good choice for side sleepers.
What kind of mattress do you choose for a hotel or guesthouse?
People go to a guesthouse or hotel to relax, not to accumulate spine and joint problems, so choosing the right mattress is key. It is also important to choose a durable mattress.
